PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This book was designed to accompany the major mid-career survey exhibition of Australian artist Janet Laurence who explores the beauty, complexity and challenges of the natural world. Janet Laurence: After Nature features two PMS inks, a deep forest green and a more contemporary vibrant green. A play between the natural and scientific informs the design and a square grid reminiscent of Laurence’s modular installations forms the basis of the layout. The grid is used to reference the Periodic Table in the contents, a device to divide pages and hold images, for title pages, and as graph paper in the end matter. Margins, type and images also conform to this grid. The main typeface, Noe, is elegant with hard, flat slabs which sit nicely with the visible grid lines. The secondary font, Apercu Mono, lends a scientific feel. A layered tracing paper section printed with Laurence's tree images echoes the giant semi-translucent veils that make up the central part of her installation Theatre of Trees created specifically for the exhibition. After going to print, the new work was documented, and these images are featured in an additional booklet that sits in a pocket at the back of the book. A die-cut bookmark of a pressed flower, photographed from one of the artist’s sketchbooks, is discovered as you leaf through the pages. The cover features a dark green cloth spine. The title design on the cover accentuates the title ‘After Nature’ with nature literally turned upside down.
