PROJECT DESCRIPTION

MICA is one of the leading art schools in North America, and continues to be invested in the topics of our time. Looking for a way to show and share the vibrant work and student-life on MICA’s campus, we devised the MICA Campus Recording Apparatus (CRA). With a multitude of sensors around campus, it playfully tracked a variety of the mundane (weather) and unusual (mood) for two weeks in April–May 2019. A semester-long class was prepared to continue ideation and production of the sensors, showing that MICA is truly an exciting and open place for ideas. The student-run MICA Campus Recording Apparatus produced a constant flow of data that was processed and rendered as print-ready book covers. Each composition was saved with a time and date, resulting in 68,000 composite images of the MICA campus at a specific moment in time. In the end, these snapshots of MICA and its "inhabitants” were applied onto each book, MICA’s bi-annual Prospectus. The cover of every book therefore features a one-of-a-kind artifact made by the MICA CRA, offering a glimpse into life on campus. All the resulting books represent two weeks of MICA, each book recipient owning one specific visual recording.
