PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A conceptual artist, Hank Willis Thomas works in various mediums including photography, film and video, installation and sculpture to explore issues of race, gender, and cultural identity.
Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal… is the first time in 20 years that all of Thomas’s work can been seen together. We were challenged to bring work that is anything but standard into book format. Close collaboration with the artist and the team at Aperture Foundation ensured a faithful process and a radically appropriate outcome.

Juror Comments
The typography and blurry imagery on the cover makes this a show stopper. The broken text seems to be a provocative statement about notions of “equality.” Opening the book and seeing the adaptation of Glenn Ligon’s original art work, “I AM A MAN,” on the end sheets was an excellent interpretation. — Henk van Assen
