PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Takashi Murakami: Lineage of Eccentrics was a major exhibition at Museum of Fine Art, Boston. Goto Design was commissioned to design its exhibition catalogue, which presents key examples of Murakami’s work alongside a rich section of Japanese masterpieces spanning several centuries and arranged here according to concepts laid out by Japanese art historian Professor Nobuo Tsui.
Through its fresh, contemporary typographic treatment and the choices of vibrant colors, the combination of old and new shows how contemporary art can be seen as part of a continuum or lineage.

Juror Comments
The sequence is an exquisite entry into the book: it starts with a lively image on the case wrap; then shimmering endpapers; quiet calligraphy; and finally, beautiful pairings of Murakami images with historic Japanese masterpieces. A well paced rhythm continues between full images of the work and full-bleed details. The book closes with installation photographs, offering a final view of the old and new. — Daphne Geismar
