O que faz falta — 50 years of Portuguese architecture in democracy accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Casa da Arquitetura, tracing the Portuguese social, economic, cultural, and architectural context from Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, to 2025. The curatorial selection of projects follows a literary, critical, and personal narrative that is reflected in the material and graphic characteristics of the book, distancing it from the archival format of the traditional catalogue and bringing it closer to the notion of an art object.
The choice of format allows the technical contents to be presented in an index-like manner; the choice of paper reinforces the book’s pop dimension in its mass relationship between body and lightness; the size creates tension with the scale of the hand, immersing the reader; and the balance between literary, cinematic, architectural, and essayistic dimensions in the layouts challenges the austere hierarchy of the works.
The publication translates the flow of the exhibition space, and its fluid editing allows for a non-linear reading across chapters, decades, and projects, focusing on the theme of freedom. In the final chapter, the textual and visual essays stand out through the gesture of a “book within the book,” separating the exhibition from what is newly introduced in this object, materially creating an intentional layer that becomes visible in the object through the cut of the book block.
