PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Zak Group designed and edited CRYPTOPUNKS: FREE TO CLAIM, an 836-page exploration of the CryptoPunks, one of the world’s first and most sought-after crypto collectibles and digital art phenomenon.
Two sections — featuring over 20,000 images — were scripted and automated in collaboration with Yuga Labs engineers. Bound in fluorescent pink cloth, the book combines diverse content types on multiple papers with contrasting visual languages including: A zine-like timeline, printed in fluorescent pink, compiles 405 Discord and X posts from the Punks community. A crowd-sourced glossary defines 146 Web3 terms and concepts. A series of field reports is presented on yellow copy paper. A visual essay by Martina Tiefenthalerer pairs Punk attributes with accessories from her wardrobe, shot and edited on her iPhone, then printed with metallic silver. A contribution by artist Simon Denny features tear-out blotter paper Punks, organized by sales price using data from Larva Labs. An appendix serves as a 416-page index of all 10,000 CryptoPunks, categorized by Number, Type, Attributes, Pixel Colors, and ImageHash.
The book includes a custom Zak Group typeface, ZG Selectric, inspired by Adrian Frutiger’s IBM Univers Selectric (1964). A token-gated edition was made available exclusively to CryptoPunks owners, featuring edge printing that reads “HOLDER.”
