PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Book Description:
"Long Term Damage" delves into the darker side of human nature, exploring life-altering decisions and the far-reaching consequences of long-buried mistakes. A wicked man earns the Devil’s favor. A young girl fights to protect her little brother from the horrors lurking in the deep woods. A boy grows violent with his new doll. A rude woman finds herself trapped in the worst traffic imaginable. An aging criminal is forced to confront his past after taking a bullet.
Design Process:
As the author and I are both fans of classic horror covers, I wanted to give this one a nostalgic, worn feel. Since it’s a collection of short stories, I read a bit to get a sense of the tone. Two stories—one about a man meeting the devil and another about kids attacked by dogs—stood out as strong visual ideas.
I focused on a hellhound concept, searching for illustrations that captured both the horror of a dog attack and the hellish theme. I chose a frantic line drawing to evoke panic, then set it against a fiery red background with illustrated flames to enhance the hellish atmosphere.
For the type, I paired a pencil-style font with the dog's form, and used the vintage-inspired Shackleton Condensed for the title. To finish, I added a worn book cover overlay to tie it all together and give it that unsettling, aged feel.
