PROJECT DESCRIPTION
"Beili Liu: Mend" is the first monograph solely dedicated to the artist's practice.
The first 4 signatures are printed full bleed and present a non-chronological visual essay of Liu's body of work, spanning the past 20 years. These images are close-up and ex-situ — when sequenced together, they juxtapose the different textures, colors, themes, and materials that have been a through-line in Liu's practice.
One such through-line is Liu's use of natural, organic materials, such as sand, straw, bees wax, mulberry paper, and cotton thread. After spending several years working in the Arctic, Liu's practice has centered around water— be it the ocean, frost, ice, flooding, or drought. In particular, she's focused on the phenomena of melting ice and rising waters. To that effect, the book cover was printed on a specialty stock called "Reef," which has a texture and hand-feel reminiscent of coral reefs. We chose the color "grigio" in particular: a subtle warm-grey stock similar to the color of wet sand.
The cover is typeset in Marist by Dinamo, a typeface which derives much of its personality from pronounced, detailed serifs (see especially the uppercase "M"). During production, we discovered that Reef—due to it's semi-coated finish— responds very well to detailed silk-screening, and thus rendered Marist perfectly. It also repels finger oils, a plus for any cover stock. From the beginning, Reef felt like the right conceptual choice, but we were thrilled to discover its practical benefits as well.
