PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Emosson region in the Swiss canton of Valais boasts a breathtaking alpine landscape punctuated by a series of monumental manmade structures, including the Emosson hydroelectric dam and Nant de Drance hydropower plant. In “Hydroelectric Sublime” Beatrice Gorelli and Keiichi Kitayama set out to capture the area’s awe-inspiring terrain thereby uncovering the bond between humans, energy and water. The book weaves together photographs, essays and interviews that pay tribute to a grand manifestation of modern civilization, delving into the history of the Valais region and sharing personal testimonies of those whose lives depend on this source of power. Against the backdrop of Europe's renewable energy transition towards carbon neutrality in 2050, the book explores the many faces of hydroelectric power, through the prism of the Valais experience.
