PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The East Village Cookbook is a collection of adventures, anecdotes, and tales of a downtown New York City community told through our food.
Published to benefit a soup kitchen and food pantry across from Tompkins Square Park in the heart of the East Village, the East Village Cookbook features 100+ recipes and the occasional story from local cooks; beloved restaurants like Veselka, Momofuku, Cafe Mogador, Superiority Burger, B & H Dairy, and Veniero’s; and noteworthy residents like Susan Sarandon, Alan Cumming, and punk legend, Richard Hell.
Bound in a plastic comb favored by community cookbooks published across the US for many decades, the book is loaded with illustrations and seals throughout its 300 pages of East Village lore including original business ads, an original neighborhood map, reprints of family recipe cards, and at least one recipe submitted by text message. No submission omitted, the East Village Cookbook is a tapestry of recipes that tell the unfiltered story of us, our then and our now.
The books are topped by six different vellum dust jackets, which the one readers receive determined at random–after all, this is the East Village we're talking about here!
“From afar, the East Village is a movie, closer it’s just filthy, but look deeper to get lost in its beauty.” Will Horowitz, East Village Cookbook Foreword
