PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Ando and Le Corbusier is a two-volume project that shows how the work of two pioneers of modern architecture — Tadao Ando and Le Corbusier — share similar investigations but express them in distinctly different ways. Volume 2 includes a catalogue of more than 100 models of Le Corbusier houses made by Ando’s students in Tokyo.
The publications’ design seeks to show the affinities between the architects’ work by incorporating typography and materials that echo their shared use of concrete and natural light. A flush-cut binding, uncoated gray binding paper, exposed boards, silkscreened covers, and tip-on image translate the architects’ interest in spare material frameworks. Essays and plate entries use a reductivist approach to type weight and size; gray captions add texture, navigation, and nuance to a bright white, almost uncoated stock. The books’ compositional structure evokes organicism and delicacy, while suggesting the underlying framework beneath.
Divider stock shifts differentiate catalogue entries from essay sections. Colored papers reflect each architect’s methods: green, orange, off-white, and yellow echo the colors Corbu used in his work, while blue and gray mirror Ando’s interest in concrete, the sky, and bodies of water.
