PROJECT DESCRIPTION
“Betty Woodman: Conversations on the Shore,” is a catalog of 13 works by New York artist, Betty Woodman (1930–2018), and explores Betty’s identity as a potter, sculptor, and painter. Betty noted about her own work “I always wanted to be thought of as a painter, not a ceramicist.”
Betty’s NYC studio is a white room with bright yellow window frames and bench on its north end, and a kitchen filled with pink, green, and yellow objects on its south end. There is a photo in the room showing Betty in a fluorescent pink shirt.
The book design is coded with Betty’s colors—metadata, contents, section dividers, essays, and image index are imbued with vibrant yellow. The colophon is green; the cover is ‘Betty’ pink. The book object is a physical model of her creative environment.
The book design also embodies the flow of the exhibition, and Betty’s desire to be recognized as a painter. Betty’s 13 works are presented in 3 book sections, each ordered from work 1 to work 13, exactly as one would walk through the exhibition. The first section zooms out to frame each object against the gallery wall, revealing environmental configurations. The second section enlarges all works as perfect ceramic objects, framing each perfectly within the book’s margins. The third section enlarges each work further to 100% scale—which once framed inside of the book—allows each work to be viewed as a painting.
The glossy book pages feel like Betty’s glossy ceramic worlds.
