PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970–2020 surveys the arc of painting over the last fifty years to offer a new perspective on the medium—and the artists who are reinventing it using emerging technologies. The design of this companion publication draws inspiration from visual gestures of early computing. Edge details and highlighting on the covers nod to pixels, while the use of brackets and glyphs throughout reference the language of html code. The neon green is inspired by the color found on the CRT displays of early computers and televisions, and tight margins at top and bottom evoke the vertical scroll of a desktop computer interface. In the book’s opening essay, neon footnotes interrupt the text, mimicking the inset windows of computing terminals. For artwork plates, digital works are presented on black to evoke backlighting, while works on canvas are shown on white, reminiscent of gallery walls. Through color, typography, and pacing, this book enhances the connection between painting, emerging technologies, and the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
