PROJECT DESCRIPTION
"Converge 45 is a non-profit arts organization that collaborates with artists and community partners to build strength and resiliency in the Portland arts ecosystem. An initiative of Converge 45, the Portland’s Monuments & Memorials Project (PMMP), co-organized by Mack McFarland and Jess Perlitz, considered the conditions and impacts of public monuments in Portland, Oregon with guidance from the Regional Arts & Culture Council Public Art Committee. PMMP engaged artistic activity and civic dialogue through a public call for submissions, online talks, outdoor events, and an exhibition. Additional Converge 45 programming included an outdoor poster campaign and virtual film festival.
In documenting the Converge 45 initiatives, we were inspired by the premise that the dismantling of monuments leads to a re-thinking of structures and systems, and that a book itself is a version of a system. This book functions as an “un-monument” where each signature is envisioned as a discreet booklet whose separate covers could piece together if the book is torn apart. Our design includes intentional diversity: typographic columns resemble pedestals; content overlaps the structural running heads; online documentation “scrolls” down vertical spreads; text boxes sit atop photographic blocks of fallen monuments, mirroring McFarland and Perlitz’s foundational question of possibility: “what should be here and in what way?”"
