PROJECT DESCRIPTION

'Dear Jean Pierre' collects David Wojnarowicz’s correspondence with his Parisian lover Jean Pierre Delage between 1979 and 1982. These letters, first presented in an exhibition at P.P.O.W., capture a fundamental look into the evolution of Wojnarowicz’s artistic and literary practice. The letters not only offer an intimate look at the artist's personality as a young man in love, but also catalog the evolution of his visual language from his early ‘Rimbaud’ series and the publication of his first photographs to his friendship with Peter Hujar and the making of his first book. Pacific's design of the publication began with the use of the simple sans typography and faded image of a young Wojnarowicz on the cover, conjuring a striking and immediate portrait of an earnest young artist in love and at the very beginning of finding his voice. This clarity and balance continues with an interior that includes reproductions of postcards, drawings, xeroxes, photographs, collages, flyers, ephemera, and contact sheets laid out to scale. Each piece of correspondence has its own single page, in order to showcase clearly some of Wojnarowicz’s iconic images and work. Delage’s correspondences have largely been lost, leaving us with only a glimpse into the internal world of Wojnarowicz during his formative years.
