PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Between the visceral present and the future – Royal Chambers posits an expanded idea of home, of care and connection from micro to macro, to shine light on a more integrated and nuanced notion of life and living. The book offers insights into the processes and works of the artist-duo Wang & Söderström’s exhibition and essays from five contributing writers that unfold the idea of home as a multifaceted ecosystem. Together they describe an entanglement of shifting power structures and perspectives in a rapidly changing ‘phygital’ world.
From the simplest objects to the most sophisticated in our world, all technology – is a part of nature. The ant colony, often a metaphor for human order, challenges the notion of power. The queen ant, with no real authority over workers, sustains the colony by laying eggs in the "Royal Chamber." Ants offer lessons in problem-solving without centralised authority. They’ve evolved algorithms, using local connections that can inspire our human-made systems. While the internet lacks a central authority, we let the tech-giants control us like they were royalties.
The design of the book works with contrasts and multi-layers. A tactile embossed cover with a visual and colourful inside. The chroma-key, used on title pages, subtitles etc., plays with the speculation of what is digital and “real”. A digital layer gives an extension to each chapter and selected works where things starts to move or appear three-dimensional through AR. Introduction-text: James Taylor-Foster. Essay-texts: Jazmin Morris, Magdalena Rozenberg, Oscar Salguero, Yasaman Sheri and David Zilber.
