PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Walker Art Center exhibition Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s-1980s is an omnibus survey of artwork created during the cold war across Central Eastern Europe. Divided into four parts, the 400-page catalogue functions as an ersatz Swiss-bound "dossier" that is punctuated by 8-page duotone section dividers created on-press at Belgian art book printer Die Keure with Sebastiaan Hanekroot at Colour & Books. With a drilled book-block and a quasi-square format, the catalogue overlays the administrative grid of the region's technocratic societies with the acid-tab sheet to conjure an Acid Communist future that never quite arrived (to borrow a term from the late theorist Mark Fisher). Display type (Animo by Prague-based Heavyweight type foundry) gestures to the non-commericial, agit-prop vernacular of the period, while body copy in Evert Bloemsma’s Balance and captions in Cornel Windlin's Magda bring an administrative edge to essays, captions, and timelines. Bound in three different shades of buckram and affixed with three different stickers, the print run mixed images and cover colors to underline the multiplicity of the exhibition title. More on the book design by Ziga Testen, Kim Mumm Hansen, and Walker Design Director Mark Owens can be found on the Walker website:
