PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The 40th anniversary issue of Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston celebrates the journal as a communal anchor and a unique platform for Houston, connecting scholarship with public advocacy around critical urban, societal, and environmental issues. The first part of the publication contains an illustrated oral history with founding members of the Rice Design Alliance and the editors and designers who were involved with the production of Cite magazine over the years. This section is printed in two colors only, with the yellow gradually fading out toward the second part of the book, as can also be registered in the section of the book. In the second part of the book fifty voices—insiders and outsiders—join the conversation and reflect openly on Houston in words and images. Broken into three subsections, this part covers areas that have shaped the city in the past and continue to do so as we move forward. While the book is based on a rigid grid, different content categories are distinguished with specific typographic voices and character, such as interviews, which typographically convey the tone of a conversation amoong multiple participants. Density and openness, spatious and playful title pages and images ranging from illustration to full bleed, immersive photo essays, are modulated throughout the book to create a pace of reading that engages the reader. The book is printed on extremely light, yet voluminous paper, which gives it an unexpected soft feel and makes the 248 pages heavy book extremely light and transportable.
