Final Words draws back the curtain on what the State of Texas does not want the public to witness.
These words serve as a rebuttal to capital punishment in America. It aims to show that the 578 prisoners executed in Texas no matter if they are guilty or innocent, they are people with rights, deserving of dignity. It the juxtaposition of the prisoner’s mug shot & court record and their final words, spoken in the death chamber that produces a testament to the prisoners’ humanity. It makes a powerful contribution to the critical discourse we, must engage in. It calls on our deepest conscience to work for social change.

Final Words solution in design is its simplicity. The records of the 578 Texas prisoners executed to date their dehumanizing mugshot, court record confronted by the prisoner’s final words. The book cover impressionist depiction of various death row prisoners hooded, numbered and nameless along with the impactful tally marks, led to choose the hand-drawn typeface Acrylic Hand. This led to choose the hand-drawn typeface Acrylic Hand. The 2-inch-thick spine provided ample space almost like a second cover allowing for the inclusion of the full subhead of the book title: '578 Men and Women Executed on Texas Death Row.’

Remaining silent in the face of injustice is to choose darkness for all.
