PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This book documents an extensive installation by the artist Nairy Baghramian at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. Baghramian was given the permission to choose sculptures from the Nasher's permanent collection, by artists as diverse in their work as Henri Matisse, Isamu Noguchi, Ana Mendieta and Pablo Picasso. She then installed a series of her own works "in conversation" with the works by other the other artists. This exhibition could only be documented after it was installed, and we worked with the curator to make sure that the photographs were taken in a way that we could use to convey the relationships between Baghramian's work, the other artists' work, and the shape of the galleries themselves. The book could not be published until after the installation was over, so we were concerned with capturing the look and feel of the artist's work in the space. We separated the texts from the photographs so that the images could be read more clearly. The use of silver ink through the book is a reference to Nairy's use of cast aluminum throughout this set of works. Baghramian's work has temporal, unsettled feel to form, and we wanted the book to reflect the form, composition (and humor) that is endemic to her work.
