PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Hasta que los cantos broten (Until the Songs Spring), presented in the Mexican Pavilion during the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia9th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Under the title The Milk of Dreams, this edition of the Biennale issued a call to renew the artistic life in-person, after the COVID-19 health crisis. In such contexts, it posed questions such as: What paths will humanity take? What is our responsibility towards nature and our fellow human beings? Chosen by curators Catalina Lozano and Mauricio Marcin, the Mexican Pavilion responded with a collective dialogue by four artists: Mariana Castillo Deball, Naomi Rincón Gallardo, Fernando Palma Rodríguez, and Santiago Borja in collaboration with weavers of El Camino de Los Altos. Their work, through different mediums, construct allegories of harmonious relationships between humans and the planet, and intend to offer alternative ways of understanding our anthropocentric world. [Text adapted from the presentation of the book by Alejandra Frausto]
This publication extends the space of the exhibition to host critical and poetic texts, as well as material and documentation relating to each of the artists’ process and research. A typeface, Umbrales, was specially developed to be used on words from native languages in a respectful and critical way, bypassing the use of italics as a way of othering, underscoring the non-hegemonic concepts explored in the book.
