PROJECT DESCRIPTION

11 architectural works by Grace Sukching Cheung (XRANGE Architects) are translated into pop-up paper forms that represents the “story form” concepts of Cheung’s architecture inspired by constraints of climate, resource limitations and local culture; built throughout Taiwan. These paper representations share the same logic and structure as Cheung’s architecture projects despite the radical difference in medium and scale. These are not only paper concept models of real architecture, they are also paper sculptures, art works in their own right.

The idea of the STORY FORMS stems from a braille book wrongly sent to Cheung when she lived in New York some years ago. The book is pure white and without ink markings except for the title, with pages and pages of indecipherable raised bumps; it filled the architect with wonder and imaginations, sowing the seeds of STORY FORMS. This project was shelved for seven years before she finally feels that it’s the right time, this point in time when we are ever more drowned by infinite images of architecture on social media, with AI generating some of the most fantastic images of architecture out there these days. Yet architecture can never be understood with mediums of flatness, it is ultimately about the experience of space.

STORY FORMS will initiate readers to the multi-dimensional process of making architecture, and catch a glimpse the beginning sparks of architecture, when form emerges as an aspiration, a gesture of intention, a collective story.
