PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Innovative Urban Workplace documents the Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Architecture Fellowship studio at the Yale School of Architecture with Abby Hamlin, founder of Hamlin Ventures, Dana Tang, architect and partner at Gluckman Tang Architects, and Andrei Harwell, critic in architecture. The studio investigated the past and current role of the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City’s history of industrial manufacturing, in order to understand and meet the BNY’s mission and design distinctive ideas and solutions that speak to the type of workplace needed in an urban development today.
Manuel Miranda Practice interpreted the content of the publication by creating a custom typeface based on industrial forms (particularly metal punches). The custom font was used in and interrupted all-caps, bold Söhne Schmal Dreiviertelfett headlines and dividers. The custom typeface's baseline was offset vertically to mimic both industrial motions and workers' gestures operating machinery in factories, which made the typographic character of the publication dynamic and contemporary. Pantone 300 was used throughout the book as an allegory to the Brooklyn Navy Yard's siting on the East River.
