PROJECT DESCRIPTION
MY BODY is a collection of essays by model and actress Emily Ratajkowski.
With almost 30 million followers on Instagram, Ratajkowski is one of the most recognizable people in the world. However, one of the strongest themes of the book is about the thorny nature of photography, as the author writes about her battle to "buy back her image," and reclaim ownership over photographs of herself. So we knew that we wanted to try a typographic solution for the cover, rather than rely on a photo of the author.
The design solution ultimately emerged from a typographic constraint: namely, how do you make a small trim-size book feel "big," and keep the typography large, when the author's last name is so long?
Breaking "Ratajkowksi" onto two lines was an AHA moment, not just because it solved for the physical constraint of a long surname, but also because it led to a high concept idea. By embracing unusual line-breaks and text flow, the author's name and the title of the book are intentionally challenged and become kaleidoscopic—with the relationship between the pieces kept in flux.

Juror Comments
“For a ‘big’ NYT-bestseller book this one stopped me in the bookstore with its bold economy of decisions. The typeface conveys the ‘big book’ ethos (almost Danielle Steele-y) but that outsized ‘o’ both hyphenates the name and forms the focus of the title, breaking the rhythm of the narrower letters that surround it. Breaking the author’s famous name conveys a fragmentary quality that emerges as a theme within her sharp essays. Plays with some very challenging and unpredictable materials: perception, bias, expectation, etc.”
