PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Agnès Varda, Light and Shadow is an exhibition catalog for a show at Serralves Museum - Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira that took place from Jun 22 2022 to Feb 12 2023. The book cover is designed with one of the most charismatic self-portraits of Agnès Varda (Agnès Varda, Pied de Nez, Self-portrait. Visages, villages - Paris atelier JR) together with a bold, large scaled typography. The book documents the two installations that made part of the exhibition (Une cabane de cinéma: la serre du bonheur, 2018 and Patatutopia, 2003) but also shows another works from the artist including a photographic report made in Portugal in 1956.

Juror Comments
“A strong cover concept that unfolds back to front and plays into the dualities of the famed filmmaker herself.”
“From the dialogue over time across the front & back covers, to the way the type sits on the image in the cover, this cover does a lot with a restrained set of elements. The pop of her purple cuff on the back cover helping to rationalize the purple choice on the front, which is arresting before you know why it’s been chosen, is evidence of the thoughtful way this designer built this cover as an object to be considered formally and temporally.”
