PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Paul Chan: Breathers surveys work created by artist Paul Chan, a 2022 MacArthur Grant recipient, following his return to art making in 2010. This includes a series of anthropomorphic, pneumatic sculptures and the output of Badlands Unlimited, a publishing imprint, both of which mark a break or “breather” in the artist’s practice. Primarily known for his moving image work, Chan worked in close collaboration with the Walker’s Brian Huddleston to create catalogue that would animate the words on the page and give the body text a sense of movement. This was joined by two custom typefaces created specifically for the book, an irregular adaptation of Plantin for text, and a newly-drawn version of Churchward Design for display. An interview with the designer and artist can be found on the Walker website: https://walkerart.org/magazine/paul-chan-interviews-brian-huddleston-on-designing-the-catalogue-paul-chan-breathers

Juror Comments
“We saw a lot of soulless art catalogs, this is not one of them. A book called breathers—a moment of pause and flow—starts with just such a moment, on the cover. The type is surprisingly set in moving paragraphs that are lightly destabilized, shifting, a bit unsettling. In contrast, the page numbers are precisely placed on the page’s vertical centers helping to keep us gently suspended, oriented and moving forward through this book.”
