PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Otherwise, It Would Be Just Another River: Ten Years of Borderland Collective’s Practice in
Collaboration and Dialogue focuses on the participatory education and socially-engaged art practices of Borderland Collective over the last 10 years. The book shares the stories and collective knowledge about the U.S.-Mexico border created by students, teachers, artists, and community members in an array of Borderland Collective projects through poems, prose, photographs, and drawings.
The book design references the liminal spaces of borders, learning, and inquiry explored in Borderland Collective’s work. The book is typeset in Gräbenbach and Eliza, which Camelot Typefaces describes as each combining multiple extremes—sharp and warm, lively and rigid. Throughout the book, the gutter becomes a fluid and generative space where text and images cross over to facing pages, and letterforms are printed and stitched together on an exposed spine.
Photographs and documentation from five Borderland Collective projects are placed between two sections of academic essays that give history and context to social practice and borders and selected protocols that serve as calls to action and invitations for participation. Each section is printed on alternating paper stocks with the text sections on gray, newsprint-like paper and the project section on white uncoated stock. The book’s structure reflects the multitude of voices and perspectives that make up Borderland Collective and a framework of participation that allows for and fosters vulnerability, uncertainty, and self-reflection.
Typeset in English and Spanish.

Juror Comments
“Every image that crossed the borderlands of the spread felt like it reinforced the urgency and inspiring quality of this collective social practice's work”
“The typography is restrained and elegant, able to clearly showcase two languages. The images act as the ‘bridge’ between the Spanish and English texts and are never centered on the gutter, creating a flow, and a sense of movement.”
