PROJECT DESCRIPTION
New York 1962-1964 captures the radical cultural transformations that occurred in the city three years between January 1962 and December 1964 ramified across the world. The last great work by late curator Germano Celant, finished posthumously, exhibition and catalog bring together depict the vivid clash of creative innovations across disciplines that defined the period’s shift of artistic gravity from Europe to the United States and the rise of a cultural hegemony in the arts―curators, gallerists, writers and journalists. Modeled on the large scale and soft format of Life, the catalog is an oversized paperback “magazine” that follows a detailed chronology of the artists and curators, experimental exhibitions and museums, historical and political events that transformed society during these three pivotal years. Traditional hierarchies of the art catalog are eschewed. Typography is big and bold, integrated dynamically throughout with art reproductions, ephemera, articles, catalog pages, critical texts from the period, sketches, artists’ portraits, images from the period. Essays and quotes from the period are intertwined. Art reproductions appear as satirical ads that wryly comment on the collusion of art, culture and commerce that drove post-war consumerist America and the making of the art world at large.
