PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This book presents the work of Leni Sinclair, an 80-something year old photographer still working in Detroit. Leni Sinclair was part of the "Michigan underground" : words that describe the avant-garde scene in Detroit and Ann Arbor in the 60s. An important cross-racial coalition of writers, artists, jazz musicians and rock n' rollers allied themselves with both civil rights and anti-war protests, and for a brief few years the scene was incredibly dramatic and artistically productive. Leni Sinclair was always in the right place at the right time, and her archive creates the most important visual evidence of this amazing time. Our design strategy was to use her images in as cinematic a manner as we could, staying true to the chronological events, which are documented both in extended captions through the photographic layout, and in a biographical essay by Cary Loren that ends the book. We also gathered quotes from people in the pictures (or quotes of their writings) and ran them through the photo layout as well, so the effect is really to put together Leni's work with a social and cultural history of this time.
