PROJECT DESCRIPTION
An exhibition catalogue to accompany the 2021 Brooklyn Museum survey of four decades of work by conceptual performance artist Lorraine O’Grady. O’Grady’s multidisciplinary practice builds upon her own conceptions of self and subjectivity from the perspective of a Black woman artist. Alongside the body of work are sketches, notes, journal entries, and letters by the artist, as well as commissioned essays and an interview with Catherine Lord which, when read together, provide an intertextuality — a Both/And — that is activated through the book’s typography. Shifting justification and alignments in bodies of text further reinforce the dual nature of O’Grady’s avant-garde work as artist/curator or performer/observer, and allow for a fluidity and expressiveness within the typographic hierarchy. Gatefold pages unfold to immerse the reader in works arranged as closely as possible to their original installation sequence, and an extended timeline/biography helps to contextualize O’Grady’s unique life experiences with her development as an artist. Lastly, the spliced title treatment and ‘mirrored’ images on the front and back covers play with the concept of a flip or reflection, a Both/And.

Juror Comments
“Great grid, wonderful use of fold-outs, dynamic type pairings and treatments (I particularly love the intentionality of the offset set type across the actual gutter of the book). The design of this book delivers and does total justice for the content.” —Kimberly Varella
