PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Archetypes is the first-ever photographic compilation of this type, reaching beyond a mere artistic record of building technologies and typologies. Instead, the book offers an effective platform to consider what it means to pre-construct fragments of buildings in all their complexity. Published alongside Ross’s images are four essays framing the historical, technological, and civic significance of the mock-up.
The design of the book split in two parts: It starts off instantly with photographic plates, staged almost like an exhibition, with ample white space, and printed on a coated paper and a spot varnish to bring out the deep colors of the photographs. Separated by a single page—analogous to the end papers—the title and table of contents are introduced and followed by a series of essays that frame how architectural mock-ups have become a charged form of proto-architecture. This second part of the book is printed in a spot color only. Texts are set at a comparatively large scale, illustrations are interspersed on separate pages. The book concludes with a visual index to anchor and credit the works presented in the photographs. The books is bound in a waxed cloth with the a typographic composition of the title, almost like chiseled (foil stamped in a black matte foil) into the material.
