PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Odd Apples is a photographic journey that shatters and reframes the collective idea of an apple, showcasing the wide bio-diversity of expression alive in the world.

This collection of rare & curious apples is matched by a typographic interpretation with abstracted letterforms and bold colors that harmonize and capture the contents of the book.

BOOK FLOW
90 photographs have been selected and organized chromatically in a continuous sequence of moods, ranging from calm & airy to vibrant & poppy to dark and ominous. The book flow serves as a window to the photographer's close relationship to apples: the color harmonies emphasize the challenge these apples pose to common perceptions of the fruit.

For each apple in the book, there are brief historical notes in the back matter with location and provenance: brief & approachable encyclopedia entries, they deepen the visual story that precedes them.


TYPOGRAPHIC DETAILS
The book’s title is rendered in custom lettering that uses Rauschen Maxi (a revival of Max Bill's iconic letterforms) as a base. Letterforms have been tweaked to extend the visual metaphor of oddity in typography, and rendered in a wide gamut of colors derived from the photographic palette that captures the expressiveness of these apples.

The interior of book is typeset in HB Set and Rauschen B, two typefaces that are slightly softened, reminiscent of type printed in food products that may soften due to weather or lower quality printing. This softness combines with the photography to create a feeling of warmth and comfort.
