PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars:
In 2013, author and poet Kate Greene spent four months living in the HI-SEAS Mars simulator on Mauna Loa in Hawaii, helping NASA study the effects of isolation and deprivation on her and her crew-mates in the confines of a small geodesic dome (a topic that was eerily prescient for our collective experience during this pandemic). I decided to take an illustrative approach to this cover, which gave me the freedom to try to visualize this sense of unmoored-ness in the image of an astronaut floating alone in space, with only a slight tether to the world the rest of us take for granted.
