PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We designed the cover for Chani Nicholas’ first book, You Were Born For This: Astrology for Radical Self Acceptance, published by Harper One in 2020. As one of the most recognized and beloved astrologers of her generation, Chani directs her focus towards sharing knowledge with her community and helping people align their purpose with the world around us. In an age where astrology and mindfulness are increasingly popular, Chani distinguishes herself by using astrology as a tool for empowerment and healing.

The book's cover needed not only to reflect Chani’s unique approach to astrology but also to stand out from an increasingly crowded market. Our design deviates from astrology visual clichés and instead focuses on an impactful typographic approach using the typeface Marvin Visions. Its chunky, tightly-spaced geometric letterforms evoke a visual language reminiscent of the 1960/70s, drawing a parallel between the omnipresence of the zodiac in popular culture at the time and its prevailing relevance today.

The cover's matte black finish is contrasted by shiny holographic foil, adding both a mystical and physical quality to the book that encourages people to engage with it in a tactile way. What emerges is a highly Instagram-able object that attracts Chani’s audience as well as intrigues those who are not yet familiar with her work.

You Were Born For This: Astrology for Radical Self Acceptance has since gone on to sell over 30,000 books in just three months, solidifying its place as a New York Times bestseller.
