PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This is the 50th Anniversary special edition of Verso’s Book of Dissent. Since this was a reprint of the book, I wanted to propose a design that pushed the boundaries of Verso's in-house traditions. The title of the book, rendered in custom lettering and printed with spot Neon Pantone Yellow, wraps the entire object. The lettering style references the vernacular and urgent protest sign lettering. It is messy, bold, and rough. The main piece is hand-lettered in very small sizes and magnified to capture the rough texture. The editors at Verso generously permitted us to omit most of the information from the cover and the spine. By eliminating the subtitle author and editor information, we highlighted the phrase “DISSENT” both on the cover and the spine. For the back cover, the text block—typeset with Cyrus Highsmith's Zócalo for extra legibility in reversed slightly larger then agate sized type—replaces the word “DISSENT.” In addition, the barcode replaces the letter “O” in the word “BOOK.” As an immigrant, Middle Eastern designer/educator living in the U.S., this project was particularly meaningful to me considering that the release coincided with the social justice movement in the U.S.

Juror Comments
“The yellow typographic lettering is bold and eye-catching. The text wrap around the cover with “Dissent” on the spine conveys a sense of density and impact on first glance. The irregularity of the letterforms are one of the most compelling components of this cover.” —Kelly Walters
