PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This 1164-pages, two-volume publication contains the history of Mona, Museum of Old and New Art as well as the autobiography of its owner, Australian art collector David Walsh. It is an extended family edition of his award-winning autobiography published by PanMacmillan in 2014. For the first time a complete compilation of Mona's old and new museum architecture und future visionary architectural plans feature in a publication. Further all exhibitions from the opening of the museum until the publishing date in 2020 are documented, among it were Gilbert and George, Zero, Matthew Barney and Marina Abramovic. Additionally this publication documents an important part of Tasmania's recent history and the positive impact the museum and its music and art festivals had on the people and the economy.
The design process took more than two years. The layout is inspired by the waffle structure which is a repeating motif in the Mona architecture. This is for example noticeable in the duo-tone contents pages. In search for a suitable font, the extensive type family SangBleu proofed perfect, as it allowed space to play with for the varied elements and treatments of the publication whilst keeping visual consistency. The five-colour text heavy essays are printed on uncoated paper, whereas for the three image based sections of architecture, exhibitions and festivals, coated paper and special, high pigmented inks were used. The covers as well as the slip case are gold foil embossed with a commissioned artwork by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye on the back.
