This book was created for the inaugural list of Rise x Penguin Workshop. Rise’s mission is:

To engage, empower, and evolve the youngest readers (ages 0-5) with authentic, relevant, and elegant books.

It was privilege to work with Edel Rodriguez on this book. His work has always inspired me. His courage is truly empowering, and his boldness is the definition of elegant design.

When you start a new list at Penguin as a first time Art Director, you have to make bold decisions when selecting artists. Every choice shapes the identity of the list. The art is as much a part of the branding as the logo system. There was never any doubt in my mind that Edel fit our mission.

This brightly hand-lettered board book empowers young readers to lift themselves up! Ten relatable emotions are each followed by a centering exercise and a positive affirmation to be recited, as a practice in mindfulness. Young readers are encouraged to find their inner strength by recognizing and addressing their emotions, instilling a sense of power and self-confidence.

Edel Rodriguez is a Cuban American artist who has exhibited internationally with shows across North America and Europe. Inspired by personal history, religious rituals, politics, memory, and nostalgia, his bold, figurative works are an examination of identity, cultural displacement, and mortality. His work speaks truth to power in the American tradition of the First Amendment and freedom of the press.
