PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For the fifth time a curatorial team has assembled a Hammer biennial that shines a light on some of the dynamic and distinctive artistic practices that make Los Angeles a rich and fertile cultural landscape. The thirty artists participating in the exhibition catalogue represent a diversity of cultural positions, geographic origins, generational approaches, and strategies of art making. For each iteration of Made in L.A., it can be said that the exhibition is a core sample, a snapshot of what is happening, at that moment, in studios across the city, and Made in L.A. 2020 is no exception.
It is extremely exciting that the fifth edition of the Hammer Museum’s biennial is marked by a unique partnership with the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. Furthermore, the show was curated by a team of three: Paris-based independent curator Myriam Ben Salah, L.A.-based independent curator Lauren Mackler, and the Hammer’s own Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, assistant curator of performance for the exhibition. Along with the book's designers at Studio ELLA, the resulting book was made to break the mold of a traditional exhibition catalogue, allowing artist studio shots to speak for the respective creative processes and front and back matter was placed in the center of the book, along with interviews and texts.
