PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Genealogies of Art, or the History of Art as Visual Art is the catalogue of an exhibition held at the Fundación Juan March (Madrid) and Museo Picasso Málaga that showcases the many visual means devised by artists, designers, illustrators, historians, essayists, poets, writers, and art critics to explain the history of art. One of these representations is materialized within the space of the exhibition: specifically, the famous diagram that was created by Alfred H. Barr, Jr. for the cover of the catalogue of MoMA's pioneering exhibition, Cubism and Abstract Art (1936).
The catalogue had to reflect in the most successful way, the idea of the diagram. The words of the title are connected, resembling Barr’s diagram. The hard cover’s dyecut reveals the phosphorescent lines on an asphalt road. By opening the book, we discover the connections between the different parts that make up the history of Art. This exhibition is, in fact, about the lines.
The inside of the catalogue further explores the idea of connection in the contents page (a pure diagram) and the section openings. Offset paper is used for the research content, coated for the pages with artworks. Tiempos is used for body text and Futura –originally used in Barr’s diagram– as display type.
